Measure the room first
Note wall length, ceiling height and where windows, vents and outlets sit. Leave 30 to 36 inches for walkways, and 14 to 18 inches between a sofa and coffee table.
Then measure the path in
Check the narrowest point: doorways, hallway turns, stairwells and elevator depth. Compare against the piece's diagonal depth, not just its width - that is what matters going around a corner.
Tape it out
Mark the footprint on your floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day. It is the fastest way to know if a sectional will swallow the room.
